WHO ARE WE?
Libertarians believe that you have the right to live your life as you wish, without the government interfering -- as long as you don’t violate the rights of others. Politically, this means Libertarians favor rolling back the size and cost of government, and eliminating laws that stifle the economy and control people’s personal choices.

Welcome to the New River Libertarians website!

The New River Libertarians is the local Libertarian Party affiliate committee in the New River Valley area (in particular, for Floyd, Giles, Montgomery, and Pulaski counties).

The Libertarian Party believes in individual liberty and personal responsibility. We believe that governments at all levels are too big, too intrusive, and too expensive. We are working to reduce government to its proper constitutional role: to protect the rights of the people, and otherwise leave us alone.

Libertarians Protect Property Rights

On June 23, 2005, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in the case of Kelo vs. City of New London that there is no protection under the US Constitution against the use of eminent domain by municipalities to take land from private owners to transfer to other private parties. The import of this decision is that your house and land could be taken because your town council or county board of supervisors believes another private party can use your property in a way that will generate more tax revenue for the town or county. Most Libertarians have condemned this decision as destructive of the right to own property.

The decision has galvanized people around the country to take action. In Virginia, the Jefferson Area Libertarians (based in the Charlottesville area) organized VirginiaPropertyRights.org to push for an amendment to the Virginia constitution that would prohibit communities from taking land from property holders to bestow upon other private parties. We urge all Virginians to work for such constitutional protection. For more information, please go to VirginiaPropertyRights.org.
